First of all I want to thank you all for being here, but most importantly I want to talk with you about the most discussed topic at our school. We have all heard that Mr. Bayer wants to use video surveillance here at our school to stop burglary and thee damage of school property. As you know, you all now have the chance to vote against that. That’s why I want to make clear, why all of you should use the opportunity and vote against it!
I want to ask you if the cameras oud be neccessary at our school. Not they aren’t! We don’t have a problem with burglary here at our school! So why is there a need to put cameras everywhere in school? And also to stop damage of school property? We don’t have a big problem with damage of school property either but even if students destroy or damage for example a chair, that’s something the teachers can prevent in the classroom as well! So the cameras wouldn’t give us any privacy at all and would also be a complete waste of money.
Also I think everyone of us cares about privacy in the internet, so that only our friends can see for example our facebook profile or anything like that, sowhy should we accept that someone can observe us at any time in real life? I don’t want to give anyone the chance to get every little information about me! Do you want that?
But the video surveillance in school leads to another, even bigger, problem! I want all of you to ask yourself how you would feel if you know that someone is able to watch you at all times! I would be really scared and I think many of you will have the same opinion.
Just think about it! No matter what you do - someone sees it. That scares me! Not only because someone may be watching me the whole time – which would be scary enough already – but also because we had the surveillance by the stasi and shouldn’t we all have learned from this? And something like this also starts small. And do we really want something like this to happen again? I guess you don’t! So I need all of you to use your chance and vote for more privacy and against the video surveillance at our school!
